Smart Garage Door & Wi-Fi Openers being carried out on a Houston home

A smart opener answers the question everyone in Houston traffic has asked at least once: did I leave the door open? You get a phone alert when it opens, a button that closes it from anywhere, a log of every cycle, and the ability to let a delivery or a dog walker in without handing out a code. Most existing openers can be retrofitted for a fraction of a new unit.

What you get

  • myQ, Aladdin Connect and universal Wi-Fi controllers — retrofit or full replacement
  • Open/close alerts and a full history of every cycle, per user
  • Timed auto-close so a door left open never stays open past dark
  • Works with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and car HomeLink
  • Battery backup so it still opens when the grid goes down in a storm
  • Guest access you can grant and revoke from your phone — no keypad codes to change

How we do it

Check what you already have

Most LiftMaster and Chamberlain units from 2011 on accept a myQ retrofit hub for around $130 to $220 installed. If yours does not, a universal controller with its own tilt sensor works on virtually anything.

Install and join the network

Hub mounted, wired to the opener terminals, sensor fitted, and joined to your home Wi-Fi — including the 2.4GHz band separation that trips most people up on a mesh router.

Set up on your phone before we leave

App installed, account created, alerts and auto-close configured, voice assistant linked, and family members invited. You watch it work from your phone with the technician standing there.

Signs you need smart openers

  • You regularly leave home wondering whether the door is shut
  • Deliveries, dog walkers or contractors need access when you are out
  • Teenagers, a rental unit, or anyone whose comings and goings you would like logged
  • Your opener is older than 1993 and has no rolling-code security at all
  • You want the door to close itself automatically every evening
  • You are already adding a video doorbell or smart lock and want it all in one app

What customers said

★★★★★

“My son backed into the door. They matched the panel to our HOA-approved colour, ordered it, and had it in within the week. From the street you cannot tell anything happened.”

Karen S.Sugar Land, TX · Panel replacement
★★★★★

“Booked the $79 tune-up expecting an upsell ambush. Instead I got a 27-point report with photos, a fraying cable pointed out, and a straight answer that everything else was fine. Fixed the cable, done.”

Jonathan P.Kingwood, TX · Annual tune-up
★★★★★

“Door would not close after dark for a week. Turned out to be a wire the previous owner had stapled through. Found in ten minutes, fixed in twenty, and he tested the auto-reverse with a 2x4 in front of me.”

❓ FAQ

Smart Openers — your questions

Can I make my existing garage door opener smart?

Usually yes. Most LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers made since 2011 accept a myQ retrofit hub, roughly $130 to $220 installed. Everything else — including old Genie and Craftsman units — can take a universal Wi-Fi controller with its own door sensor.

Is a smart garage door opener secure?

More secure than what most people have now. Current units use rolling-code encryption that changes on every press, versus the fixed codes on pre-1993 openers that a $30 device from the internet can capture and replay. Use a strong password on the app account and enable two-factor.

Will it still work in a power outage?

The Wi-Fi features need power and internet, but battery-backup openers keep opening and closing the door on their own battery. Given how Houston storms treat the grid, we recommend battery backup on every install — and Texas requires it on new residential units.

What is the best smart opener?

For most Houston homes: a belt-drive LiftMaster with built-in myQ and battery backup. Quiet enough for a bedroom over the garage, and it still works when the power is out.
