Broken Garage Door Spring: What to Do Right Now
If you heard a bang from the garage and the door is now immovable, a torsion spring has broken. This is the most common garage door failure there is, and the most dangerous one to attempt yourself.
What is causing it
Ranked by how often we actually find each one. Work down the list — the first two or three cover the large majority of cases.
1. The spring reached its cycle life
Builder-grade torsion springs are rated at 10,000 cycles — about seven years for a family that leaves and returns twice a day. It is wear, not a defect.
→ Replace in pairs; consider 25,000-cycle high-cycle springs.
2. Rust from Houston humidity
Gulf air corrodes the coil, rust creates a stress riser, and the crack starts there. This is why springs here often fail earlier than their rated life.
→ Replacement plus annual lubrication to slow the next one down.
3. Improper sizing on a previous install
A spring that does not match the door weight is overworked from day one. We find this on a surprising share of doors serviced by cut-price outfits.
→ Re-spring to measured door weight.
4. An unbalanced door working the spring harder
Binding track, seized rollers or a dragging bottom seal all add load the spring was never sized for.
→ Full tune-up alongside the spring replacement.
What you can safely check yourself
- Do not use the opener. Forcing it will burn out a $400 motor trying to save a $300 spring.
- Do not try to lift the door by hand — without spring counterbalance it weighs 150 to 400 pounds.
- If a car is trapped inside, leave it and call. Getting it out is a ten-minute job for a technician with the right bars.
- Keep children and pets out of the garage until it is repaired.
- Photograph the broken spring for your own records, from a safe distance.
⛔ Where to stop
This one has no safe DIY path at all. A torsion spring stores enough energy to break bones, and the winding bars are the whole job. Every manufacturer prints the warning directly on the spring for a reason.

Broken Garage Door Spring — questions
How much does it cost to replace a garage door spring in Houston?
$220 to $380 for a single torsion spring installed, $380 to $560 for the pair — which is what we recommend, because the second spring has taken identical wear and is on borrowed time.
Should I replace one spring or both?
Both. Same install date, same cycle count. Replacing one leaves you paying a second service call within a year, and an unevenly sprung door then damages the opener.
How long does spring replacement take?
Sixty to ninety minutes including the balance test and hardware inspection. Most of our spring calls are booked and finished the same day.
Are high-cycle springs worth it?
On a door that cycles four or more times a day, yes clearly — roughly triple the life for about 40% more cost. On a rarely used detached garage, standard springs are fine.
