Garage Door Remote Not Working? Try These First
If the wall button works and the remote does not, the door is fine — this is a battery, a programming or an antenna problem, and most of it you can sort out yourself in ten minutes.
What is causing it
Ranked by how often we actually find each one. Work down the list — the first two or three cover the large majority of cases.
1. A dead or dying battery
The classic tell: it works from three feet away and nowhere else. Range collapses long before the remote dies completely.
→ Replace the coin cell — a few dollars.
2. The remote lost its programming
A power surge, a battery change, or someone holding the LEARN button too long can clear the memory.
→ Press LEARN on the motor head, then the remote button within 30 seconds.
3. A damaged antenna wire
The thin wire hanging from the motor head is the receiver antenna. Tucked up, cut or coiled, range drops to almost nothing.
→ Let it hang straight down, full length, uncoiled.
4. Radio interference
LED bulbs in the opener are a notorious culprit, along with nearby transmitters. Houston has plenty of both.
→ Swap opener bulbs for incandescent or LEDs specifically rated for garage door openers.
5. A failed receiver board
Wall button works, no remote works, and reprogramming does nothing. The receiver in the motor head has died.
→ Board or external receiver — $129–$260.
6. The vacation lock is on
Many wall consoles have a lock button that disables all remotes. Easy to press by accident and easy to miss.
→ Press and hold the LOCK button on the wall console to switch it off.
What you can safely check yourself
- Check for a LOCK indicator on the wall console and switch it off.
- Replace the remote battery — this fixes most cases.
- Make sure the antenna wire hangs straight down from the motor head, uncoiled.
- Reprogram: press LEARN on the motor head, then the remote button within 30 seconds.
- Try a different remote or the keypad. If nothing wireless works, it is the receiver, not the remotes.
⛔ Where to stop
If reprogramming works but the remote loses it again within days, the logic board is failing. Replacing remotes repeatedly will not fix that.

Garage Door Remote Not Working — questions
Why does my remote only work up close?
A weak battery or a compromised antenna. Change the battery first, then check that the antenna wire hangs free and full length from the motor head.
How do I reprogram my garage door remote?
Find the LEARN button on the motor head — usually under the light lens — press it once, then press and hold your remote button within 30 seconds until the opener lights blink or it clicks. Same procedure for most LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie units.
Can LED bulbs stop my remote working?
Yes, genuinely. Cheap LED bulbs emit radio noise across the frequencies openers use. Swap to bulbs specifically marked as garage-door-opener rated and range often returns immediately.
