Garage Door Stuck Halfway: What It Means
A door that stops mid-travel and stays there is telling you it has met resistance it was not expecting. The three usual suspects are track obstruction, a failing spring, and force settings.
What is causing it
Ranked by how often we actually find each one. Work down the list — the first two or three cover the large majority of cases.
1. An obstruction in the track
Debris, a warped track section, or a roller that has shifted. The opener hits the resistance and stops as designed.
→ Inspect the track for debris and visible bends.
2. A failing or broken spring
Losing counterbalance mid-travel means the opener suddenly meets the door's real weight and gives up.
→ Spring replacement — $220–$560.
3. Travel limits set wrong
The opener thinks it has reached the end of travel and stops early. Common after any hardware work or a power interruption.
→ Limit and force recalibration.
4. A worn or seized roller
A shattered or seized roller binds at the track curve and stalls the door in the same place every time.
→ Roller set replacement — $129–$240.
5. A bent track at the curve
The transition from vertical to horizontal is where impact damage shows up first, and it stops the door at the same height every cycle.
→ Track straightening or section replacement.
6. An overheated opener
Thermal cutout after repeated cycles, especially in a 120°F Houston garage in August.
→ Let it cool 15 minutes. If it recurs, the door is dragging and the motor is overworking.
What you can safely check yourself
- Note whether it stops at the same height every time — a consistent stopping point means a mechanical obstruction, not electronics.
- Visually inspect the tracks at the stopping height for debris, bends or a displaced roller.
- Do not repeatedly force the opener against a stuck door. You will strip a gear or burn a motor.
- Pull the release cord and try moving the door by hand — where it binds tells you exactly where the fault is.
- If it will not move by hand at all, stop and call.
⛔ Where to stop
A door stuck part-way is a door held up by whatever is jamming it. Never work, park or walk under it while it is in that state, and never try to force it down.

Garage Door Stuck Halfway — questions
Why does my garage door stop halfway and reverse?
Usually the safety force setting reading resistance as an obstruction. The resistance is real, though — find what is causing it rather than turning up the force, which just makes the door push harder against a fault.
Why does it stop at the same spot every time?
That is mechanical, not electronic — a bent track, a bad roller, or debris at that exact height. Electronic faults do not pick the same inch every cycle.
Can I just increase the force setting?
No. Force settings are a safety limit, not a power dial. Turning them up so the door pushes through an obstruction defeats the auto-reverse protection and can hurt somebody.
