Garage Door Reverses Before It Closes: Why

The door goes down, touches the floor or gets close, then runs straight back up. There are two distinct versions of this and they have completely different causes.

What is causing it

Ranked by how often we actually find each one. Work down the list — the first two or three cover the large majority of cases.

You can check this

1. Photo-eyes interrupted on the way down

If it reverses part-way down, the beam is being broken — misalignment, dirt, glare or a wire fault.

→ Clean and realign the sensors.

Needs a technician

2. Close-limit set too low

If it reverses right as it touches the floor, the opener is driving past the true closed position, sensing floor resistance, and reading it as an obstruction.

→ Close-limit adjustment — a five-minute setting most people never touch.

Needs a technician

3. Close-force set too tight

Normal seal compression reads as an obstruction and triggers the reverse.

→ Force recalibration.

Needs a technician

4. A worn bottom seal or uneven slab

A hardened seal or a high spot in the concrete adds resistance right at the end of travel — very common on older Houston slabs that have shifted.

→ Seal replacement and limit adjustment.

Needs a technician

5. Binding track at the bottom

The last foot of travel is where a slightly narrow track binds hardest.

→ Track alignment.

You can check this

6. Debris on the threshold

A pebble, a leaf drift, or a garden hose across the opening.

→ Sweep the threshold.

What you can safely check yourself

  1. Note exactly when it reverses: part-way down means sensors, at the floor means limits or force.
  2. Sweep the threshold and check for anything under the door line.
  3. Clean both sensor lenses and confirm both LEDs are steady.
  4. Check the bottom rubber seal for hardening, cracking or a section that has curled.
  5. Do not simply crank the force setting up — that removes the safety, it does not fix the cause.

⛔ Where to stop

If the door closes and does NOT reverse when it hits an obstruction, that is the opposite and far more serious fault. Stop using the door and call today — the auto-reverse safety is not working.

❓ FAQ

Garage Door Reverses Before Closing — questions

Why does my garage door go down then come back up?

Part-way down is the photo-eye sensors. Right at the floor is the close-limit or close-force setting, or something adding resistance at the end of travel like a hardened seal or a high spot in the slab.

How do I adjust the close limit?

Most openers have limit adjustment screws or buttons on the motor head, but getting it wrong leaves the door either not sealing or slamming into the concrete. It is part of every tune-up we do and takes minutes.

Is this dangerous?

The reversing itself is the safety system doing its job — annoying, not dangerous. The dangerous version is a door that hits something and keeps going. If that is what yours does, stop using it today.
