Garage Door Opening Slowly or Struggling
A door that has lost its pace is a door that has gained resistance. It is an early warning, and it is much cheaper to answer now than after the spring or the opener gives up.
What is causing it
Ranked by how often we actually find each one. Work down the list — the first two or three cover the large majority of cases.
1. Springs losing tension
Springs weaken gradually before they break. The opener has to make up the difference and everything slows.
→ Spring adjustment or replacement.
2. Dry or seized rollers and hinges
Friction the door was never designed to fight. The most common cause and the cheapest fix.
→ Proper lubrication — part of the $79 tune-up.
3. Opener speed or force settings
Some units have adjustable travel speed, and force settings affect how hard the motor works.
→ Recalibration during a service visit.
4. A worn drive gear or chain
A slack chain or a partly worn gear loses drive efficiency before it fails completely.
→ Chain tensioning or gear kit.
5. Track misalignment
A track slightly out of plumb makes the door drag against it for the whole travel.
→ Track alignment.
6. An ageing opener motor
Bearings and capacitor both degrade. On a fifteen-year-old unit this is usually the end of the story.
→ Opener replacement.
What you can safely check yourself
- Pull the release cord and lift the door by hand. It should feel like about ten pounds and stay put at waist height.
- If it is heavy or will not hold position, the springs are the problem, not the opener.
- Lubricate hinges, roller bearings and spring coils with proper synthetic garage door lubricant.
- Check for track debris and visible bends along the whole run.
- Note whether it is slow in both directions or only one — one direction points at the opener, both point at the door.
⛔ Where to stop
A slow door is a door working harder than it should. Left alone it takes the spring first and the opener second — two bills instead of one tune-up.

Garage Door Opens Slowly — questions
Why is my garage door suddenly slower?
Added resistance somewhere: dry rollers, weakening springs, or a track pulling out of alignment. Sudden change usually means something specific broke rather than gradual wear.
Can I speed my garage door up?
Some openers have a travel speed setting, but if the door has slowed on its own, speeding the motor up just forces it through the underlying problem. Fix the resistance instead.
How fast should a garage door open?
Around seven inches per second for a standard residential opener — a 7ft door in roughly twelve to fifteen seconds. Noticeably slower than that, or slower than it used to be, is worth a look.
